Hôtel des Invalides, Paris

The following relief maps are exhibited in the Musée des Plans-Reliefs, part of the Musée de l'Armée in the Hôtel des Invalides, Paris. The collection comprises 100 relief maps in total, which are currently undergoing a restoration project. The first phase of this project is complete, and the museum currently displays 24 relief maps of fortresses in the coastal areas of France.

The maps are displayed in an arched attic of Les Invalides where they have been stored since 1777. With low light levels to avoid damaging the relief maps, the museum is strangely atmoshperic, particularly when quiet. Each map is fronted by a display panel giving information about the fortifications and showing pictures of the site today.
